A white pair of jeans or a beautiful white dress is only flattering when its white remains the way you bought it. Yellowing of white clothes is indeed the most saddening part in your closet.

It is necessary to store white clothes at a closed and cool place that is away from extremities of temperature like the garage, closet near the sunny side of the room or basements. If you want to store your favourite whites for a particular season (like a white jacket for winters), an acid and lignin free archival tissue is a must. Use this tissue around the storage box so that your white favourite is away from any sort of metals or plastics it can react with.

Most of us use chlorine-based bleach to brighten the white colour of clothes. However, it is essential for you to know that chlorine bleaches when overused on the same cloth a number of times can also cause the white to yellow. Synthetic fibres like nylon, microfibers, and polyester are all-the-more prey to bleaches. Chlorine bleach makes these fibres loosen thus turning synthetics to its colour of origin, yellow. Even on cotton clothes, over worked bleach can be the actual reason for whites to turn yellow.

It is also noted that chemical-based detergents also cause the white clothes to lose their colour due to its harsh qualities. One wise advice would be to switch to Organic detergents. Made with the richness of essential and anti-bacterial oils along with nature’s fragrances and ingredients, an organic detergent can save the day.

Here are some of the ways through which you can brighten your favourite white dress to its true colour:

1. USE THE SUN

Yes, the sun! its as simple as that. Once your clothes are all washed and rinsed, hang them in the burning heat of the sun. You must skip the dryer for this. Sun, in its fully blooming scotching heat acts as a natural whitener for clothes. This is because the UV rays of the Sun are capable enough to break chemical bonds of any kind. Thus, keeping your clothes in Sun makes its UV rays break the chemical bonds of stain or any sort of discolouration.

This is a science experiment more than a hack. Have you ever tries leaving anything in the Sun only to see it lose its colour and turn white?

2. CITRUS
Citrus not only whitens your clothes but leaves them with a shining glow. Take 1/2 cup of lemon juice to 1 gallon of heated water and mix the two together. Now soak your tarnished clothes into this solution for an hour. You can also leave them to soak overnight. Once soaked, take the clothes out of this water and add this remaining solution to your washing machine. Wash off your clothes normally and leave to dry.

You will notice your ever-wanted white shine to your favourite whites.

3. WHITE VINEGAR

White vinegar is a life saver in the laundry world. White vinegar not only is the most effective and least harmful solution to bleach but also acts as a fabric softener making your clothes have a fleecy finish when you wear them after washes.

Take 1/4th cup of lime juice, ½ cup of white vinegar and add them to warm water. Soak your clothes in this mixture for about 30 minutes and wash them as usual. There’s more! You can add 1 cup of white vinegar additionally while a normal wash. This makes your clothes free from any smells.

4. BAKING SODA

After washing your clothes with detergent, add 1 cup of baking soda to 4 litres of your rinsing water. Rinse off the clothes in this water for a usual timer. Once done, dry them or hang in the sun and your whites are good to go.

Furthermore, baking soda leaves your clothes with a fresh and soft finish after wash. It also prevents your clothes from growing any sort of micro bacterial growth because of its mild antiseptic properties.

Apart from these, there are obviously chemical based everyday whiteners like Borax, Hydrogen Peroxide and Blue. So, here you are! Try these hacks yourself and turn your favourite white clothes back to their true colour.
